How we count
- Characters count every visible character, space and line break. An emoji or flag counts as one character, the way you see it.
- Words are groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Hyphenated words such as “well-known” count as one.
- Sentences end with a period, question mark or exclamation mark, so abbreviations like “e.g.” may add an extra one.
- Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute.
FAQ
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Everything is counted in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. Your text disappears when you close the page, so keep a copy of anything you need.
Why does another site show a slightly different count?
Tools differ in whether they count line breaks, trim spaces at the ends, or treat emoji as one or two characters. If you're near a hard limit, leave a few characters to spare.
